Energetics of wind-driven barotropic variability in the Southern Ocean

چکیده
This study addresses the energetics of the Southern Ocean, in response to high-frequency wind forcing. A constant-density, multi-layer model is forced with a band of stochastically varying wind stress. The focus is on the interplay between the surface layer and the interior circulation. In line with previous examinations, it is concluded that the interior ocean is not directly energized by the wind work, but rather through the work done by the pressure field. The spatial and temporal characteristics of these terms differ substantially. Although the wind work may be negative in extensive regions of the World Ocean, the pressure work energizes the interior circulation almost everywhere. For low-frequency variability, the total work done by the wind and pressure on the barotropic flow is comparable, but discrepancies may arise for high-frequency variability. A mechanism is identified through which kinetic energy can leak from the wind-driven surface layer to the barotropic flow.

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate
In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...

This study uses a global ocean eddy-permitting climate model to explore the export of abyssal water from the Southern Ocean and its sensitivity to projected twenty-first-century poleward-intensifying Southern Oceanwind stress. The abyssal flow pathways and transport are investigated using a combination of Lagrangian and Eulerian techniques. In an Eulerian format, the equatorand poleward flows w...
متن کاملOn the fast response of the Southern Ocean to changes in the zonal wind
Model studies of the Southern Ocean, reported here, show that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current responds within two days to changes in the zonal wind stress at the latitudes of Drake Passage. Further investigation shows that the response is primarily barotropic and that, as one might expect, it is controlled by topography. Analysis of the results show that the changes in the barotropic flow are...

متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE The Work Done by the Wind on the Oceanic General Circulation
A new estimate is made using altimeter data of the rate at which the wind works on the oceanic general circulation. The value of about 1 TW is lower than previously estimated and is dominated by the work done by the mean zonal wind in the Southern Ocean. The meridional component of the mean wind contributes primarily in the eastern upwelling regions of the ocean. Fluctuating component contribut...
